Learning Government in a Real Way

Our class has been learning the process of how a bill becomes a law by living it out in the classroom. Over the course of the last few days, the students have done the following steps while trying to create new laws for our classroom:

1. Split into the House of Representatives and Senate of Room 306.

2. Split into playground and classroom sub committees in each chamber of Congress.

3. Wrote bills to try and improve what happens in our classroom or on the playground on a daily basis.

4. Discussed, rewrote, tabled and passed bills to be discussed in full sessions of Congress.

5. Debated, revised, and passed bills to be sent to the President of Room 306.

6. Experienced a veto of two bills by the President and made revisions.

AND

7. Learned how checks and balances ensure no one branch of government can take complete control of government operations.

At the conclusion of our simulation, the students were able to get two bills passed into law by the President of Room 306 (ME!). The final copy of the laws are officially pictured below and will be carried out for the rest of the school year as stated on the laws. Click on each picture to show the full size.

WE HAD A BLAST! Living out what we learn is great fun!
