Winter Fun and Work

Parents,

We’ve been hard at work in the classroom and on the playground! The winter snow has made the playground very fun! Snow forts are starting to pop up everywhere Mr. Rob makes a new snowbank. Check out the tunnels built by some of our students below!

Also, we’ve been working hard in all subject areas. In math, we’ve finished our division unit and and are now working on problem solving skills in the context of word problems. This unit challenges students to write equations to help them solve all sorts of word problems. We are in the middle of studying the sun, moon and Earth in our first science unit. We are making good progress! Be on the look out for some study materials later this week.

In reading and writing, we are working hard to respond to what we are reading in the form of constructed responses and literary essays. They are very similar, but essays require more evidence paragraphs and detail. In small groups, we are working on using a strategy to help us remember the important steps of writing a great response. It is called RACES.

R – Restate the question

A – Answer the question

C – Cite evidence/examples

E – Explain how the evidence answers the question

S – Sum it up

Check out a great example of this type of response writing below! I hope you are enjoying the snow… if not, I hope you’ve cranked up the heat and are bundled up! 😀
