Looking Ahead in Reading

Hi Parents,

Thank you for a great first week of school! This week we’re going to be in full swing with our 4th grade curriculum. We are going to begin getting into our yearly routines for reading and writing. There are a few things in reading I want to highlight:

1. Your child will read for 20-30 minutes at school everyday, and will need to read for 20-30 minutes 5 days each week for homework.

2. When your child reads at home, they will be filling out a reading log EVERY time they read. They need to record the start time and beginning page before they read, and then the finish time and ending page once they complete their reading.

3. I am going to stress to the students how important it is they read the same book at home and school. They will be transporting their book to and from school until they finish it. Our goal is to absolutely DEVOUR books this year.

4. Most fourth grade readers can read a page in a chapter book in two minutes. This means a 150 page book can be finished in 5 hours. If a child reads for 40 total minutes in a day, their book can be finished in 7.5 days! That is a chapter book each week!!!

Think of how empowering it would be to read one chapter book each week this school year? Our children would be incredibly strong readers!
