  1. Dear Mr.Bowen
Two characteristics of the sun is that the Sun’s core is 30,000,000 degrees. Also, you could fit 1million Earths in side of the sun
    Sincerely,Keegan

  2. Dear Mr. Bowen,
1 thing is that it takes 8 minutes and 20 seconds for the suns light to hit Earth because it has to go through space so that is really fast! The 2nd thing is that the sun is a star it is the closest star to Earth.
    sencirly,
    Allie

  3. Sun Facts:

How much does the sun weigh?

The Sun is about 2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg (a 2 with 30 zeros kg, or about 4.4 with 30 zeros lbs). Maybe you learned in your physics class what’s the difference between weight and mass. For example a person of 50 kg weighs 50 kg on Earth, 8.3 on the moon, and 1354 on the Sun.

How big around is the Sun?
The radius of the Sun is about 700,000 km (435,000 miles). As you know the circumference of a circle is 2 pi r, where r is the radius. That makes 4.4 million kilometers (2.7 million miles) for the circumference. For comparison, the circumference of the Earth is about 40,000 km (25,000 miles), about 100 times smaller than the Sun.

    How heavy is the sun?
The Sun has a mass of 2*10^30 kg, that is about 300,000 times greater than the mass of the Earth. Mass depends on the amount of matter in an object. Weight on the other hand, varies with respect to local gravity, however the Sun is not sitting near anyones gravitational field.

    • Tara,

Your facts were awesome! Way to use the internet to find great information. Also, you were very responsible for giving the source of the information. It is so important to give people the credit they deserve! Great job!

  4. Mr. Bowen 3 characteristics are you can fit 1 million earths in a sun .And the suns rays takes 8minutes and 20seconds to get to the earth. The sun is actually a star it is the closest star to us.

  5. Hey,
    My 2 characteristics are…
:you can fit 1,000,000 earths into the sun.
:the black spots on the sun are called sunspots.
Those are 2 characteristics about the sun.
    Sincerely,
    Emilie=)

  6. Dear Mr. Bowen

Here are two characteristics of the sun. One of them is that you can fit one million earths inside of the sun. The sun is not a planet it is a star. And for fun I will do one more. The sun’s ray takes 8 minutes and 20 seconds to hit earth!

  7. Dear Mr.bowen
    two carerteristicts
of the sun are the sun is a star and you can fit 1,000,000 earths in side the sun and i am sorry but i wont to say more so i am
the sun is made out of gas and it tacks 8 min and 20 sec to see the sun and to hit the earth and hear is a nother one the black spots on the sun are the cool spots that doseint mean it is not hot but it is the yellow red and ornge spots.
and those are a lot of stuff about the sun
    you friend an student
    Ellie

  10. Thank you for this excellent picture of the sun! After searching NASA’s website for the best image of the sun I browsed the net and founds yours. Is this photo courtesy of NASA? I would like to use it for my classes too but want to give credit to the photographer.

And BTW – here are more than a couple fun facts about the sun:

The sun holds 99.8 percent of the solar system’s mass and is about 108 times the diameter of the Earth.

The visible part of the sun is about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5,500 degrees Celsius). The sun’s core temperatures reach more than 27 million F (15 million C), driven by nuclear reactions. NASA says that “One would need to explode 100 billion tons of dynamite every second to match the energy produced by the sun”.

The sun is one of more than 100 billion stars in the Milky Way. It orbits some 25,000 light-years from the galactic core, completing a revolution once every 250 million years or so. The sun is relatively young, part of a generation of stars known as Population I, which are relatively rich in elements heavier than helium. An older generation of stars is called Population II, and an earlier generation of Population III may have existed, although no members of this generation are known yet.

Thanks to space.com for sharing these fun facts with us.

I look forward to your reply. 🙂

  11. Thank you for your reply.

And thank you for being an educated and talented teacher who cares about their kids. 🙂

May you have a happy day!
