For those who follow our blog outside the United States, visit this excellent History.com post about the history of Thanksgiving. And, for those of you who have not had a refresher course on this holiday,  you might find yourself learning some new facts to share around the Thanksgiving table later this week.  For those who think they know everything, test your turkey knowledge with this quiz.

If you’re looking for things to do with family members over the Thanksgiving Break, show them our blog and the school blog to update everyone on what we’re doing.

And, to really spice up the family gathering, take your family on the BLOG SCAVENGER HUNT. This month we are sharing silly stories about silly things we have done in our lives.   Everyone is a winner in this contest.  Students will be entered in the Reading Counts drawing just for participating.  Other prizes will be offered too.

Parents,

I wanted to remind you that our Writer’s Celebration is on Monday, November 23, at 9:00 AM.  Every parent is welcome and encouraged to come.  Our goal is to have too many parents come so we can have smaller groups of authors and readers together.  You will be blown away by some of the stories you see and hear on Monday.

Grace and Peace to you this weekend!

Mr. Bowen

Parents,

I sent a note home today to make sure you receive this request.  Please, please, please dress your child warmly for school.  Please send them in with a WINTER coat from now on.  Today, there was a wind chill of 32 degrees before school and at lunch it was 38 degrees.  This is too cold for the kids to only be wearing a sweatshirt or light coat without hats and gloves.  Please send in warm clothing tomorrow to help keep us healthy and safe during this pre-winter time.  Thanks a bunch!

My name is Tom and the fiction book that I read was Diary of a Wimpy Kid-Dog DaDiary of a Wimpy Kidys by Jeff Kinney.  I picked this book because my friends said that it was a very good book.  I bought it at the book fair this year.  My favorite part of the book is when Gregory’s friend Rowley smashed Gregory’s hand because he saw a horror movie with a muddy hand in it.  Gregory and Rowley decided to camp out in front of the game store to be first in line to play “Twisted Wizard”.  They had to stay up all night to make sure no one cut in front of them.  To stay awake Greg ate a bunch of chocolate energy bars.  When it was time for Rowley to take Greg’s shift Rowley wouldn’t wake up so Greg saw that he had a lot of chocolate on his hands and decided to scare Rowley and pretend to be the muddy hand.  Rowley had a hammer from nailing in the stakes of the tent and got scared of the “muddy hand” so he wacked Gregory’s hand.  I enjoyed reading this book because it was funny for me to see how Greg’s summer went.  He got in a lot of trouble.  I couldn’t imagine having a summer like that.

Parents,

If you would like your child to receive a little extra one-on-one time with a licensed and experienced teacher, Mari Beth Gleason, a paraprofessional at Alward and Georgetown Elementary is open for tutoring.  She is offering support in ALL needed subject areas.  She has 12 years experience tutoring with Hudsonville Schools curriculum.  She will work parallel with me to ensure the support your child is receiving is in line with what we’re learning in our classroom.

The tutoring will meet immediately after school for one hour either once or twice a week, as preferred.  If you are interested in this opportunity and would like a paper flier that includes cost information and Mari Beth’s contact information, please email me at cbowen@hpseagles.net and I will forward this information along to you ASAP.

Welcome to Mr. Bowen’s Blog (if this is your first time)…  I love to be silly and crazy.  Two of my favorite people are the “flower girls to be” for my wedding.  In the picture below, we are getting out of control and silly after a long day of making sidewalk chalk pictures.  What does Mr. B. do in order to be silly????  I just hang out with kids!!!!  Happy Hunting!!!

Silly Mr. Bowen

Parents,

This is a great resource for you and for me as we seek to see what level of books are children are reading.  I could add this to the sidebar in our blog, but the application is too large!  So, I am keeping this as a blog post and you can search for “book leveler” and the post will show right up.  Use this to check up on your child and to make sure they are reading age-appropriate books!
